According to the myths of ancient China, a catastrophe overtook the world in its early days when humankind, created by the goddess Nű-wa, began to populate the earth. The disaster, caused by a dispute between two deities in some sources, tore the firmaments asunder and upset the course of nature. To save the world and the human race, Nű-wa quickly melted down precious stones and repaired the firmaments with them.

I did this sketch either in the late 1990's or early 2000's and showed it to Wan Hung-ch'eng, a Chinese paper cut master from Beijing, asking if he could have it made into a paper cut. He happily agreed. This image is scanned from his wonderful work with some modifications.
