P'an-ku was a being at the beginning of time in Chinese mythology who forced apart the earth and sky, originally mingled together in an undifferentiated chaos, by holding them apart and growing ten feet daily for 18,000 years. After this he died and every part of his body became a part of the natural world. His breath became the wind, his hair turned into trees and vegetation, his two eyes became the sun and moon, and so on.

I did this sketch in the early 1990's and worked on it for a few years before having the good fortune to meet with Wan Hung-ch'eng, a Chinese paper cut master from Beijing, to whom I presented the sketch with a request to have it made into a paper cut. He happily acceded to my request. The present image is scanned from his magnificent work.
